— Joss Whedon - OMWF DVD Commentary Transcript (via band-candy)
[Re: “Standing”] This song: I knew Tony was going to have the saddest ballad. I knew where he was, and I knew he was going to give me the huge pipes. And the song really was… it was a lot of fun to write, but it was putting it together visually that made me understand what was special about it. The fact is, he’s singing about wanting to protect her. He’s singing about, you know, it’s every parent’s dilemma. “I want to take care of you, but eventually I have to teach you to take care of yourself.”
And for him to be doing this, to be singing about wanting to protect her, while he’s throwing knives at her head is the kind of complete turn-around that is, I think, a staple of the ‘Buffy’ universe. And it’s what I really love about living in it. And then this was one where I also visually knew what I was going to do early on. That I was going to go to the extreme slo-mo. Put Sarah in extreme slow motion and have Tony move around her in regular time. It, to me, works to separate them, to make him more lonely; and is dramatically sort of exciting visually.
Whedonesqued: Joss Whedon talks Ripper
AVC: But we should give up on that Giles spin-off, Ripper, right? Come on.
JW: Oh yeah, totally. [Laughs.] No, the thing about Ripper—the essence of it—is that the BBC came to me at one point like, “It doesn’t have to be Ripper. It can just be [Anthony Stewart Head], and there’s magic,…
Make it so.
I thought this was a sort of romantic image, the two of them. We actually did it with real fire, but their hands were all gelled up and you could tell, so this was added in CGI and it looks beautiful. I thought it was a nice comment on their relationship. But what I basically told [Sarah and James] was: “Play the romance. Be proud of him. Love him when you say you love him. Love her when you say she doesn’t love you. Forget about the crumbling world. For that period of time, it doesn’t exist.” It’s a cinematic trick, but it’s a necessary emotional one. — Joss Whedon (“Chosen” Commentary)
Beautiful.
Your affection for your charge has rendered you incapable of clear and impartial judgment. You have a father’s love for the child, and that is useless to the cause.
